Baited Late Season Archery Deer Hunting during the second Rut at Ohio Whitetail Deer Outfitters

Baited Late Season Archery Deer Hunting - 2nd Rut

We own a really unique piece of property on the Guernsey - Noble county line. It is a contiguous piece over 500 acres in size. We have always used it as a holding area for the deer. The neighbors run more deer in and with food and security, they stay there. We used to make little finesse drives in the middle of the week (gun season), an average day for me was over 50 head of deer. Our personal best for a small drive was 64 head on one drive. We hunted slow and made sure the deer did not exit the farm, insuring they were there for the next hunt or next year.

This year on Wednesday and Thursday I saw a total of 20 different Bucks. In years past, we used corn piles, clover pastures, no hunting pressure to make sure we either had a good place to hunt now or to make sure we saved the deer for later. It is this scenario that we adapted our late season hunts. I will be patrolling the perimeter fences for trespassing activity, which is usually none. I arrest and jail all trespassers - no exceptions.

The deer are being fed heavy by feeders and with no one to push them off the farm, therefore they stay there. Sheds and trail camera pictures show many bucks are there year after year. With the deer that live on the property anyway and all the ones pushed in and feed and left alone, the bow hunts will start over the feeders on the day after gun season closes.

This time of year is the 2nd Rut, so it is very important to have all the local does coming to the feeders, the few that come in heat again will have quite a fan club now. This year, an employee used this program on his ground, he shot a 5x5 with 8 stickers (18 points). It was following a doe into his feeder 2 days after gun season closed. The Buck I shot this year was harassing a doe and Sherri´s Buck was looking for does. At this time of year it´s cold, food is getting harder to find and the deer have just been hunted hard. When the deer find 500 acres of food and cover with little hunting pressure, they stay put. It´s not exactly rocket science is it? But having 500 acres and the determination to stay off of it, is not something a lot of people can or will do. So for Bow hunters who want to extend their season with a higher than normal chance of success, here is the hunt for you. We run a lot of cameras on the feeders, so we know which ones are likely to produce.

The colder the weather, the better this hunt is. Milder weather works against us. Now if only you can predict the weather a few months in advance, I would appreciate it if you would teach me. Mother nature has foiled my best laid plans on many occasions.
